Those Battles Within and Without

By Mary Lindow

Life can present us with challenges and decisions that are not easy to make on our own.

We may pray about the situation and read God’s Word for guidance, but still feel disoriented and uncertain about the direction we are to take.

You might even ask the questions,  “How long am I going to have to live with this pain? How long before EVERYTHING doesn’t upset me?”

These are good questions, and there are, thankfully, answers!

Here are some thoughts that may be helpful to you.

Trauma, which is any significant problem that we are not equipped to handle, creates a ripple effect in our lives.

Because these are not ‘every day problems’ we don’t know how to handle them.  They are “sucker punches to the gut” that leave us woozy, frightened, confused and struggling to catch our breath.

It’s very important to admit the power of trauma and to recognize those ‘triggers’ that remind of us of the horrific event or situation that still troubles us.

GIVE yourself time to deal with those triggers.  Hopefully, others will be patient as you process the trauma, loss or sorrow.

You are attempting to ‘eat an elephant’ and this will not happen in one sitting.  You might wrestle with the nightmares, the flashes of past memories, the hyper-vigilance, which is the anticipation of a recurring painful situation.

You may struggle to regain your footing and each ‘triggering event’ sets you back at bit! Temporarily.

BE READY for these situations and a roller coaster of feelings as you start healing.

YOU NEED quality time to process the triggering event.  Allow yourself the freedom and permission to feel the feelings you’re having, the grief you are experiencing and the deep, deep hurt and pain.

RECOGNIZE your feelings and give them a lot of ‘air time.’  Journal about them, pray through them, being honest about them.  Tell yourself that you are ‘normal’ and that triggering events happen to everyone in one form or another.

INVITE God into your triggered, shaky feelings.  The comforting scripture verse, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”, is a great promise for safety,  (Romans 8:31).

REMIND yourself that God will bring you through this, in his time, and there will be benefits to your suffering.

THANK GOD that you can grow and become a stronger person as a result of the trauma you are experiencing. This experience does not need to break you!

It might feel like you are shattering, but actually, it’s a “letting go”.

Letting go of expectation, anticipation of disappointment, getting your eyes opened to a clearer understanding of what you can and can’t do anymore.

In these times it can be extremely helpful to seek the counsel of other wise and godly people.

Someone who has weathered a few storms and is still kind, still moving into purposeful change, and graceful behavior themselves.

“A wise person will listen and continue to learn, and an understanding person will gain direction,”  Proverbs 1:5 (GWT).

Let’s Pray Together For Emotional Healing

Gracious LORD,

You know me better than I know myself and I need Your healing touch on my life today.

You know all about the emotional pain that I have been going through these last few days – and oh LORD, I need You to come into my heart and to bind up the brokenness within me.

I feel that I have been battered and bruised emotionally and am almost gasping for breath, due to the pain that has been stabbing my heart.

LORD, You know that I have no one in whom I can confide – because no one really understands the searing wounds that have shattered inside me and the deep anguish I am going through.

Oh LORD, I come to You to heal my emotions – heal my wounded heart, I pray, – heal the anguish that is deep inside.

LORD, flood every corner of my being with Your soothing balm and Your healing love – and root out I pray, all the negative emotions that are bubbling inside me, like a smouldering volcano.

Release into the aching void deep within my being, Your love and Your peace, Your hope and Your gracious presence, and gently carry me as a kindly Shepherd would carry a frightened, little wounded lamb.

LORD, I am trusting in You, because I know that You alone can be trusted,

In the faithful name of Jesus.
