The Adoption as Sons: What Does It Mean?

By Jacob Awagah

Our adoption as sons by Jesus Christ is the Divine legal right and judicial process of re-admission into the family of The Father of our LORD Jesus Christ, through His Blood, having been forgiven our sins.

I have been repeatedly prompted by The Holy Spirit that many wonder and ponder, or misunderstand what it means that we have received adoption as sons.  Hence, I have to put out this Word.

Not too long ago, I had the occasion to correct and counter a very dangerously erroneous statement by a brother who stated: “You are an adopted child of The Father so are step brother or step sister to Jesus.”

NO!  We are NOT.  The LORD’s “step brothers and step sisters” — we are His BRETHREN, fully and wholly.

Hebrews 2:11-12 makes the point very explicitly:

“For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them BRETHREN, saying: “I will declare Your Name to MY BRETHREN; in the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.”

The Son of God calls us His BRETHREN (His brothers and sisters), not “step brothers and step sisters”!

You see, **“adoption” in Scripture is not with the literal understanding of adoption in the world.

God’s adoption is reconciliation and reinstatement of those who believe as His children by the Divine legal and judicial event of The Cross of Christ.  It is a Divine legal right by faith in Jesus,  (John 1:12 NKJV).

In other words, by The Blood of Jesus,  we are reconciled and reinstated as children of God, “The Father of our LORD Jesus Christ, from whom THE WHOLE FAMILY in heaven and earth is named,” Ephesians 3:14-15.

Additionally, God’s adoption is of His Spirit: “You received the Spirit of Adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father,” (Romans 8:15).

As you know all too well, God created mankind as His children in His image.  But we sinned, and were separated from Him by our sin.

Then, by the Divine love that surpasses understanding, He sent His sinless, all-obedient and ONLY Son (Divine Son) to suffer for us the utmost, unbearably severe punishment for our sin, on The Cross. He shed His PRECIOUS Blood for us.

So ACTUALLY, we are legally, judicially, spiritually, physically and in all other requisite senses, God’s children by Blood; The PRECIOUS Blood of Christ.  We are children of God by Blood, The Blood of Jesus Christ His Son!

We are the brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ by Blood, His Blood.  We are heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.  Hallelu-YAH!

Again, we are NOT The LORD’s step brothers and step sisters.  It is a most gross and serious Scriptural error to say so.

As far as I have found, the word “adoption” is in five places in The New Testament, (see below Romans 8:15, 23; 9:4; Galatians 4:5; Ephesians 1:5.)

The ultimate intent of the word “adoption” has to do with “the Redemption of our body” (Romans 8:23), when “we shall all be changed — in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.  For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed,”  (1 Corinthians 15:51-52).

Oh, what a moment that will be!  GLORY to GOD!

In this ultimate aspect of the adoption,

“The  body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption.  It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory.  It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.”   (1 Corinthians 15:42-44).

Adoption by God is by His Blood and Spirit — fully, wholly and bodily.

Oh, THANK You Father, forever and ever.

**Adoption:  υἱοθεσία, uihothesia, hwee-oth-es-ee’-ah.

From a presumed compound of G5207 and a derivative of G5087; the placing as a son, that is, adoption (figuratively Christian sonship in respect to God): – adoption (of children, of sons). (Strong’s).

**Adoption:   Thayer Definition:

1) adoption, adoption as sons

1a) that relationship which God was pleased to establish between himself and the Israelites in preference to all other nations.

1b) the nature and condition of the true disciples in Christ, who by receiving the Spirit of God into their souls become sons of God.

1c) the blessed state looked for in the future life after the visible return of Christ from heaven.

“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”   Romans 8:15.

“Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body,”   Romans 8:23.

“Who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises,”   Romans 9:4.

“To redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons,”   Galatians 4:5.

“Having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,”   Ephesians 1:5.

“The LORD Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you.  Amen.”   2 Timothy 4:22.

“Farewell”   Acts 15:29.
