The Spirit of Slumber

By Robert Blackburn

God, has allowed things….

That reality has often caused great unease among even those who know Him.  There was a time when we had true awareness of the idea and truth, that some things, we just didn’t understand.

We were taught to trust Him.  We even sang about having an answer one day; sitting down with The LORD and having Him tell us what it was all about.  But until then, we must keep trusting.

The children of God have always had times of disobedience.  It seems certain, that no matter how many times God delivers and sets us free from our errors, we often tend to backslide.

I sometimes wonder if He doesn’t get tired of us doing that.  But He created us as human; don’t you imagine that He knew what to expect.

Giving us choices, was His idea; having a mind of our own to choose what we thought best.  Allowing us to make mistakes; but being ever so merciful to our faults.

Accepting the truth that God would even send A Spirit of Sleep upon His People, takes a deeper knowing of His ways.

There are times, when we are so determined to follow our own path without Him and not the leading of His Spirit, he lets us.  The enemy operates in distraction; slowly pulling us away from what we know to be right.

He’s full of empty promises and if he can get us to focus on our own desires, we are so easily led astray.  We are led away, by our own wants and self-needs.

There was a loss of liberty in The LORD.  Someone took away that permission to lead, in the way The Spirit said to go.  The apostle wrote about the craftiness of men; about not handling the Word of God deceitfully.

We will likely have to wake up to the fact that there have been those who used God’s people wrongly.  It’s not a new thing.

Changing the true order that was placed in the Church, could only lead to corruption and misuse.  What we are charged with now, is that so many of us, saw it.

“But though He had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on Him,”   John 12:37.

The next part of this is right where we likely are today.

“Nevertheless, among the chief rulers, also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees, they did not confess him.  Lest they would be put out of the synagogue: For they loved the praise of men more, than the praise of God,”   John 12:42-43.

God blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts because of it.  What they could have had, they missed.

In our world and in our land today, we the people have been asleep.

Turning away from God, was a gradual thing; it did not happen overnight.  Becoming so busy with the cares of this life, the desire to have things, seeking more and more for that which satisfies self.

The more self we seek, the more self we get. In overdoing it, the terms balance, compassion for others and helping your neighbor quickly slip away.  Until there is a crisis — and now we have one; but our spiritual wells are empty.

“Then, will I hear from Heaven,”   2 Chronicles 7:14.

But that only comes after we have turned from our wicked ways…..

The healing we need so badly in our land, comes after He has forgiven our sins for the things we have done.

I’m not sure that “we, the people” are ready yet to face the things we have done.

I’m not so sure much of The Church is either.

Blaming, is an old game.  What did I do; where did I go wrong.  What blinded me?  Aren’t my excuses lame at best?  How much longer can I live in denial.

God wants us to have pleasure; He delights in our happiness.  But it’s this loving pleasures, more than loving Him.

He does want us to prosper; but that’s not our main goal and not that we lose our own souls in the process.

The ordained ministries He set in His church, could have dealt with every one of our needs; and our shortcomings.

From the higher-ups, the pulpit, all the way to the back door.  There’s an old saying, “God will work, but who will let Him?”

Saints, you’re going to have to talk to one another.  Our whole country, needs an answer.  Today.
