"How to Turn a Shark Attack to Your Advantage"

By Kathie Walters

Rocks in the Road and Flat Tires

Lately, I have received a few calls from friends who have been getting under all kinds of depression and discouragement. They experienced a few circumstances that were difficult. There will always be rocks in the road and there will always be flat tires. If you focus your attention on the rocks, then you won't go very far – which is the plan of the enemy. However, if you keep your eyes on the road, and your destination, you can maneuver around the rocks and continue; the destiny is worth it.

How to Stay on the Highway

Have you thought about how we get over instead of under? It's really simple. When Jesus said, "...the truth will set you free" (John 8:32), He wasn't just speaking about salvation, but your whole life. We have to stay on the HIGHway. The highway is where the truth is. So the key is to stay in the truth, right?

Enemy Territory

Do you realize that the only way the enemy can get at you, or to you, is to get you to receive a lie? He will draw you into his territory and start to beat you up.

When I lived near Bondi Beach in Australia, my friends and I would spend many hours on the beach. There were lifeguards and small planes that would watch out for those white pointer sharks that swam around the shores.

I was on the beach one Saturday afternoon when the warning sirens went off 100 times. People were warned to get out of the ocean because those sharks could swim in just a few feet of water.

These sharks are not huge, but they have about 300 teeth. If they got you – well, there would be lot of harm done. The ocean is their territory and they know how to operate there. But if you were on the beach, and you put those same sharks on the beach, I guarantee, there's not a whole lot they could do except thrash around. So you see, their only way to get to you is to get you into the ocean (their territory).

Throwing Thoughts

The enemy attacks you when he throws thoughts at you. He can't speak to you, if you stay in the truth.

He'll throw statements at you like: "Things aren't working for you," "God hasn't got anointing on your life," "Other people have more calling; you've missed it," "You don't have enough faith," "You failed, you don't really have a ministry," "People don't care about you," and on and on. If you take those thoughts on board, you will start to go under because they're heavy.

But there is a great secret that Jesus told us: DON'T TAKE THE THOUGHT (see Matthew 6:25-34). He told us to take no thought of what we're going go eat, what we're going to wear, etc. These are ordinary things that people worry about, but Jesus told us to not to even think about them; don't take the thought. When the devil throws the thought at you, DON'T TAKE IT.

Turning the Thought Around

In fact, you can do much better. You can REFUSE the thought and you can turn it around. If you feel heaviness and depression, don't "take it." Say to yourself, "Thank you, God, for giving me joy." Start laughing in the face of the enemy. Do the opposite. The enemy can only get on you if he can get you to come into the water, or into his territory. He can start to give you a beating, but if you stay in the truth (on the beach), there is nothing he can do.

The devil can't live around you if you stay in the truth, because THERE IS NO TRUTH IN HIM. It is not his territory. It's not about a feeling, but the enemy can throw a suggestion your way.

Suggestions have power, if you receive them.

Once, my eyeglass doctor suggested that I had glaucoma, but I said, "I don’t."

He said, "Oh, I think you do."

I said, "I don't."

He did a test and told me, "You don't have glaucoma."

I said, "I know."

Then he suggested that I had a bit of cataracts.

I said, "I don't."

He said, "I think you do at your age."

I said, "I don't."

The doctor said, "I will do a test."

I said, "Go ahead."

He then did a test and said that I didn't have any cataracts. He told me, "Your eyes are very healthy."

I said, "I told you that when I came in.”

You know, there was power in those words – not that the doctor meant anything bad, but the enemy wanted to throw some things my way, if I would receive them.

Be careful of the enemy's suggestions, and the negative thoughts he throws. He just wants to lure you into his territory. Stay in the truth, sing the songs of Zion, and remember: DON'T TAKE THE THOUGHT.

this is so beautiful and such a testimony to the Lord's healing power and sanctification through our suffering. Much of my walk with Christ is similar to yours.
