Intimacy of Christ

By Denise Sylvia Bekker

What is the true meaning of intimacy?

Intimacy has many varied attributes. It has everything to do with ‘relationship’ and even deepens ‘covenantal relationship’. It has a bonding value, a bringing together, a connection, a marriage. We associate intimacy with closeness, friendship, and love. Deeper intimacy is born out of a greater commitment and development thereof. True intimacy of Christ, and intimacy in Him, is knowing who you are in Him and Him in you. To know Christ, and then Christ in me. This intimacy development is growing in the Abidance of Christ Jesus. Thus the relationship deepens and grows into a more mature intimacy in Him. This is spiritual intimacy in Christ.

The intimacy of Christ is born out of true love. The abiding intimacy of Christ is a woven relationship of coming to the know His personage and character transformations which are many faceted, as we come to know Him by drawing closer to Him, being drawn by the power of His love. This abidance is having been born into the Family of God. This is kinship, having been drawn into the Royal family of God. The intimacy of Christ is the building blocks of spirit, body and soul.

Spiritual intimacy is dimensional and varies in degrees according to how deep our commitment and how our relationship grows and develops in Christ. The intimacy of Christ is correlated and found in the abiding of the vine; the Father, Jesus and the Spirit. The laying down of His life is the greatest love of all. This is the Agape love of God, the ultimate intimate relationship gift given unto us, that as we draw near to Him he draws even closer to us. The intimacy of Christ is all encompassing and projects a spiritual vastness of manifold love.

The true meaning of the word ‘agape’ portrays an intimacy of Christ that far transcends all of our known knowledge of the love of Christ. Agape is not only to be in awe and wonder, but also to have a greater and eager expectation and attention in Him, but the word also portrays the meaning of ‘wide open’. How much of our heart are we giving to open up to Him, that will allow His love to permeate our very being. It is this love that unlocks the awesome wonder of God, and floods our inner being with golden oil.

Song of Songs 2:3: Let Him kiss me with the kisses of His mouth; For Your love is better than wine. Because of the fragrance of your good ointments, Your name is ointment poured forth.

2 Cor 2:14: Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses (manifest) the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.

The intimacy of Christ exceeds the First Love experience of Christ Jesus. This intimacy is a maturing love of growing in the likeness of Him by covenant relationship. It is the inward, innermost part of us that intensely desires more of Him, drawn by the power of the attraction of His anointing. This is the essence that draws us to endure with Him. The intimacy of Christ is a manifold force. One of the facets that portrays this intimacy was born out of the passion of Christ. This was part of the fervent desire for all mankind to come unto Him. The intimacy portrayed here was a suffering love, but having a sustaining endurance born out of a Holy desire to the Glory of the Father.

The intimacy of Christ also manifests ‘a zeal in the Lord’, a fervent desire to grow spiritually in the Lord. There is a spiritual fire that burns within us not only to endure, but to pursue Him ardently and desire all of Christ Jesus intensely. This is the Spiritual Love that is poured out from on high.

The intimacy of Christ, I liken to as His seal of love within us. I believe that He spiritually sets His heart upon ours and by doing so, imparts to us an intensity to desire all that He has for us. This is an awakened love.

Song of Songs 7:10: I am my beloveds and His desire is toward me.

Ps45:11: So the King will greatly desire your beauty.

Because He is your Lord, worship Him.

this is so beautiful and such a testimony to the Lord's healing power and sanctification through our suffering. Much of my walk with Christ is similar to yours.
